general, localized, or task lighting.

How it is used depends greatly on how the light
is distributed by the fixture.
Task lighting is usually concentrated light
which purpose is for reading, needlework, or
tasks that require close inspection of
materials. For instance, reading and paper work
may require task lighting levels of
approximately 1500 lux (equal to one lumen per
square meter), and some tasks such as certain
surgical procedures require an even greater
level of light.
Accent lighting is used mainly for the purpose
of decoration. It can be used to accent works of
art, plants, or other items such as interior
design or landscaping.
General lighting is for areas, which do not,
required the intense illumination of task
lighting but do require more light than that
given off by accent lighting. For indoors,
generally lighting would include the basic table
or floor lamp, ceiling fixtures. For outdoors
use, general lighting would include overhead
parking lot lights used for the safety of
pedestrians and motorists.
