Making Small
Spaces Seem Large with Lighting
Special lighting
techniques can really open up small spaces. For
example wall sconces, plant lights and ceiling
bowl lights can all make a low ceiling appear
higher.
You can also accentuate fancy crown molding
or a patterned ceiling using these fixtures. You
can provide adequate task lighting for reading
and other activities in rooms with little floor
space by using pendants, swing arms, and other
wall lights. You can create subtle effects by
using a wall sconce with a mirrored back. You
can make good use of the floor space you have by
using floor lamps that incorporate magazine
racks or built in tables. You can get light
around your sofa without end tables by using a
pair of candlestick lamps at each end.
You can create interesting works of art on your
wall by using groupings of sconces in a
particular area. You can also add light into a
room by using picture lights to highlight your
favorite painting or photograph. You can create
the illusion of a wider hallway by using cable
track lights to accentuate art pieces along the
wall. You can add sophistication to a small
space with a small chandelier or hanging lantern
on a dimmer switch.
