Make the Most
of Your Spaces with Lighting
How you feel in
a room is in large part attributable to the
rooms lighting. You should carefully consider
the lighting choices you make in order to make
the most of any room.
The following fixtures discussed below can
help you make the most almost any decorating
scheme.
Track Lights
These lights ability to focus attention on one
item or area have made them incredibly popular
over the last several years. You can immediately
highlight a bookshelf or wall with the use of
track lighting. You can use track lighting to
highlight almost anything, from prized family
photos to antique collectables.
Recessed Lighting
These are one of your softest lighting options.
The light will naturally disperse over a wide
area since it originates at a point higher than
the ceiling. You will probably need several of
these fixtures in a room that requires a lot of
light since the light that they provide is less
intense. Recessed lights are not the best choice
in a study or work room.
Shelf Lights
A large bookshelf can really make the entire
area around it rather dim. These lights attached
to an upper shelf and project light onto a lower
shelf. This serves to highlight the items that
are in the shelf. It is not a good idea to use
shelf lights if the items on the shelf are not
attractive. You can light up the entire wall by
placing several shelf lights in a single
bookcase.
Lamps
Lamps are great at bringing both style and light
into a room. There is a wide variety of lamps
available so it should not be hard to find the
perfect one for your room’s décor. When shopping
for lamps it helps to remember the following
hints:
- Only use large lamps when you have a
large space to fill.
- The color of the lampshade will
determine the color of the light that is
dispersed throughout the room, so choose
carefully.
- You will get a larger area of softer
light with lamps that point upward.
Overhead Lights
When lighting a room these are probably the most
important of all the various fixtures. While
ceiling fans with lights attached are popular
these days, remember that you have several other
options. Other popular and attractive choices
include chandeliers and Tiffany style lights.
Take a good look at your room when designing
your lighting plan. You will need more light in
darker colored rooms as they tend to absorb
light. It is much easier to light a brighter
room. You can maximize your light sources by
including lots of mirrors and glass in the room.
Efficient task lighting is most important if a
space will be used for reading, sewing, or other
craft projects. No matter what your needs, you
are sure to find a light fixture that works well
for your particular application.
