Lighting Your
Kitchen for Maximum Effect
One of the most
important home improvement projects you can
undertake is updating your kitchen lighting so
that it is effective and inviting.
Each task area of the kitchen needs
sufficient light so that you can safely and
enjoyably perform tasks. There also needs to be
enough general lighting so that the room is warm
and inviting. The tips below should help you
make the best choices when it comes to lighting
your kitchen.
Overhead Lighting
Many older kitchens have only one light, or
perhaps only one type of lighting. Even if this
light is in the middle of the room, it is
probably not sufficient enough to give you
adequate light. In rooms that have only one
overhead light there should be lots of
reflection so that the light can bounce around
and brighten up the room.
Track lighting is a great idea for those that
have only one light source in their kitchen.
Track lighting allows you to focus lights on
particular areas of the room. One idea is to
focus your track lighting on your main task
areas and then use decorative lighting fixtures
to illuminate tables and island areas.
Counters and Work Areas
You will probably not be able to get enough task
lighting using one big light in the middle of
your room. One big problem with this set up is
shadows every time your back is to the light
source. You need proper lighting in order to
make your kitchen chores safe and enjoyable.
Under cabinet lighting is a great source of task
lighting for kitchen countertops. These lights
are great at providing soft light that lets you
safely chop or read a recipe without the glare
of harsher light fixtures. You can turn these
lights off when they are not in use, or leave
them on during the night to light the way for
those in search of a midnight snack.
Island and Table Lighting
The lighting for your islands and tables should
blend well with the overall décor of your
kitchen. You will want to carefully consider the
fixtures that you choose.
Hanging lights are the most popular choice for
eat in islands. You can pick enough fixtures to
give you adequate light at your island. You will
probably want to get your table lighting on a
dimmer if possible. A good choice is a
chandelier which matches the overall style of
your kitchen.
